Stark Contrast

By DOUG TUCKER/The Associated Press

LAWRENCE — In appearance, temperament and approach, Kansas coach Turner Gill appears to be the polar opposite of the man who left the job amid strife and turmoil.

Unlike the non-athletic Mark Mangino, Gill was a topflight quarterback at the highest level of collegiate football, starring at Nebraska during a time when the Huskers dominated.

Also in contrast to his sometimes-contentious predecessor, Gill seems pleasant, approachable and warm, much less prone to confrontation. Mangino was loathe to make personal appearances on behalf of the school. Since he was hired last winter, Gill has seemed to enjoy them.

Late TD pass sinks Chiefs

Salina Journal

By The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — This was one of those preseason games that sent both teams home with plenty to work on.

Mike Kafka’s 18-yard pass to Riley Cooper in the closing seconds boosted the Philadelphia Eagles past Kansas City 20-17 on Friday night, making Todd Haley 0-7 in preseason games as the Chiefs’ head coach.

Back on the prowl

By DOUG FERGUSON The Associated Press
PARAMUS, N.J. — Yes, that really was Tiger Woods’ name atop the lead- erboard.

In his first tournament since his divorce, Woods finally looked like the No. 1 player in the world Thurs- day at The Barclays when he opened with a 6-under 65, his lowest score of the year, to share the lead with Vaughn Taylor. It was his first time leading after any round on the PGA Tour since the Tour Champion- ship last September.

“It’s exciting to hit the ball flush again,” Woods said. “It’s something I’ve been missing all year.”

He didn’t miss much at Ridgewood Country Club. Woods hit all but one fair- way and putted for birdie on all but two holes. And while he hit his driver only twice, they were two of

U.S. ‘B Team’ seeks elusive title

By BRIAN MAHONEY AP Basketball Writer

ISTANBUL (AP) — Kobe Bryant towers over a city street as he dribbles a basketball in the cover photo of a pamphlet distributed earlier this year to promote the world championships.

After offseason knee surgery, Bryant isn’t doing much dribbling at all this summer.

Even before announcing he was leaving Cleveland for South Beach, it was obvious LeBron James wouldn’t be going to Turkey.

Ochocinco, T.O. getting along, so far

By JOE KAY AP Sports Writer

CINCINNATI (AP) — Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco are getting along great as teammates. No grousing, no sulking, no one-upmanship.

The Cincinnati Bengals see no reason why this pairing of diva receivers shouldn’t stay that way.

When the Bengals signed Owens to a one-year deal at the start of training camp, the overriding question was how he would get along with Ochocinco, who is a close friend but craves the spotlight. So far, Ochocinco has gone out of his way to share it.

Cowboys blend Hunter into new offense

By JEFF LATZKE AP Sports Writer

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Go ahead and marvel at the way Oklahoma State can fling the ball all over the field in Dana Holgorsen’s new pass-happy offense.

Just don’t let running back Kendall Hunter get lost in the shuffle.

“You can’t forget about that guy,” said Holgorsen, whose offense led the nation in scoring and total yardage last season at Houston.

LPGA

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Michelle Wie has had the second hole-in-one of her professional career on the way to a 7-under 65 and a three-shot lead after the first round of the CN Canadian Women’s Open.

The 6-foot-tall Wie says she’s notched eight holes-in-one in her career, but only one other as a pro, in her rookie season at last year’s LPGA Championship. This on came on the 190-yard, par-3 11th hole.

Central Tennis

Salina Journal

The Salina Central girls tennis team opened its season by winning each of its 12 matches Thursday at the Salina Singles Quadrangular.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, had each of their four entries in the tournament finish with a 3-0 record, winning every singles division at the Central High courts. There was no doubles competition in this event.

Senior Jordan Brown and Laurel Michel won No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. The Mustangs had sophomores Sammy Jordan and Kate Martens claim the other two titles — Jordan in No. 3 singles and Martens at No. 4.

Royals win behind Bloomquist

By The Associated Press

DETROIT — Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost’s hunch paid off.

Willie Bloomquist’s one-out home run in the 12th inning gave the Kansas City Royals a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

Yost inserted Bloomqust, a veteran utility man, into the third spot in the Royals order in an attempt to spark the team’s offense, which had only managed seven runs in the previous three games.
