West overcomes self-inflicted wounds for 45-29 Shrine Bowl victory

PITTSBURG — There was no panic in the West huddle.
A series of self-inflicted wounds had turned the 37th Kansas Shrine Bowl into a shootout, but with its back against the wall the West came out with guns blazing, and in a matter of minutes it was over.
After the East cashed in on two miscues to take the lead with less than five minutes left, the West answered quickly and decisively, then poured it on the rest of the way for a 45-29 victory at Pittsburg State’s Carnie Smith Stadium.

Wittman joins staff at South

Jim Wittman will be coaching football again, although under a different title at a different school.
Wittman, who resigned last month as head football coach at Sacred Heart High School, has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Salina South football team for the 2010 season. His hiring was approved at Tuesday night’s Salina school board meeting.
Wittman was the Knights head coach for nine seasons before announcing June 18 that he was resigning his teaching and coaching position following a disagreement with Sacred Heart administrators over the hiring of an assistant coach. Wittman said at the time he hoped to coach again in the near future.

All-League Baseball
Seven members of the Salina Central baseball team have been selected for all-league honors in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail Division I, including three Mustangs named to the first team.
Senior pitcher Danny Backes, senior outfielder Clayton Koochel and junior first baseman Vince Froome were each named first team. Koochel is a repeat first-team pick from 2009, while Backes was honorable mention as a junior.
Central’s sophomore Taylor Bradley was a second-team selection at both designated hitter and utility player. Earning honorable mention recognition was senior third baseman Mike Hoffart, freshman shortstop Mark Vaughn and junior outfielder Elias Grant.
Salina South junior Luke Ernzen was chosen to the league’s first team as a designated hitter. Also earning league honors for the Cougars were freshman utility player Conner Ryan (second team) and sophomore third baseman Chance Thomason (honorable mention).
