Practices buoyed by weather

By LARRY MORITZ Salina Journal

Bruce Graber received two pleasant surprises for his first practice as Sacred Heart head football coach.

One was the weather that greeted the Knights and all high school athletic teams on Monday, the first official day of practice for six fall sports in the state of Kansas.

It almost felt like football weather when Graber and the Knights took the practice field at 6:15 a.m., with the temperature in the low 60s.

North boys score victory behind 22-0 spurts

By LARRY MORITZ Salina Journal

TOPEKA — Patience usually has no place in an all-star game.

The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association boys all-star contest was much like the fable of the tortoise and the hare. The South ran out to a quick lead but seemingly expended much of its energy. The North, after biding its time early in the game, used a 22-0 run late in the first half to take the lead for good, then held off a late charge by the South in a 111-103 victory Thursday night at Lee Arena.

The South was on a pace to score 132 points when it led 33-22 after the game’s first 10 minutes, and still led 47-40 with less than four minutes to play in the opening half.

Knights select Graber

By LARRY MORITZ Salina Journal

Bruce Graber had mixed emotions after he hung up the phone.

Sacred Heart High School administrators called Tuesday morning to inform Graber he had been selected as the school’s football coach for the 2010 season. It then started to sink in how much work Graber had ahead of him in a short amount of time.

“When they called yesterday morning at 10 o’clock I was excited about the news,” Graber said. “Then I was panicked. I don’t have any assistant coaches hired and I’ve got camp next week.”
