TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An 8-year-old Nile hippopotamus has given birth at the Topeka Zoo.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that visitors on a once-a-month “Twilight Tour” of the zoo watched the delivery Friday night.
The mother, Mara, had been on a contraceptive and was just found to be pregnant Thursday. She went through three hours of labor.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Fluid on the lungs, a difficult pregnancy and excessive heat were being blamed Friday for the death of a female giraffe and her unborn calf that had been under medical care the past week at the Topeka Zoo.
