A couple of weeks ago I wrote a column about prioritizing your recreation dollars. I want to expand upon this article a bit and try to convince all of you sports men and women out there to get involved with a local conservation or sporting organization. Get involved with the Pass It On Program by taking some kids hunting, fishing or trapping. Your involvement right now may have a huge impact on the future of hunting, fishing, or trapping in Kansas or the entire United States!!!!
The conservation movement in our state and our country has been funded and organized by the hunters and anglers for well over a century. When we look at our countries history, who were the very first to have an impact on the economy? The trappers and fur traders – that’s who!!!
Even before our country was more than a few eastern states, the fur trade was the mainstay of the economy and furs were the primary bartering agent before currency. The western part of our country might not even have been settled nor purchased had it not been for the fur trade!
