About NIE
The Salina Journal’s Newspaper in Education
(NIE) program is committed to promoting and increasing literacy through
the use of newspapers as a teaching tool. It has been proven that children
who read the newspaper at least once a week in their classroom score
10% higher on national standardized tests.
Newspapers are used by teachers to improve their students’ reading and comprehension
skills, extend knowledge in the content areas and enhance critical thinking
skills.
NIE helps motivate and teach students with a text book as fresh as each day’s
news.
Newspapers are provided to schools in our 31-county delivery area at no cost
thanks to our generous sponsors donations to our program. Click on the Special
Programs tab to see all of the special NIE programs that are offered this
year. The NIE program offers two serial stories each year as well as Big
12 Geography, Constitution Day Activities, Financial Fitness for Kansas Kids,
Work Force Career Development, Law Day activities and USA Weekend teacher’s
guide.
