Man shot after KHP pursuit through southeast Salina
3/20/2010
A man was shot once by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper and taken to Salina Regional Health Center after a brief chase Saturday morning through southeast Salina.
Highway Patrol spokesman J.L. Riedel explained the incident this way: At about 9:44 a.m., troopers began pursuing the man on U.S. Highway 81 south of Salina. The chase proceeded at speeds ranging from about 40 miles an hour on Ninth Street into the city. It continued on Schilling and Ohio streets, through a red light at Albert and Ohio, and to Cloud Street where the man’s vehicle turned east.
The man exited his vehicle in the parking lot of Emmanuel Christian Center, 1325 E. Cloud, and attempted to run into the church. He displayed a handgun to the pursuing troopers, and one of them fired once, striking the man in the abdomen. The man was taken to the hospital.
Riedel said the trooper who fired would be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the officer-involved shooting by agents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. There were at least three highway patrol troopers and a Salina Police Department officer involved in the chase, which lasted about 12 minutes, Riedel said.
Riedel had no information about the shooting victim’s condition.

To John Denver. The reason Sick spoke up first is because s/he like many others is sick to death of people jumping on here and bashing the police ALL of the time. Mediaman, 1) SPD did NOT initiate this chase, you want to complain please get the correct agency, otherwise you just sound like a hater. 2) The police CANNOT shoot someone just for running. You are watching too much TV again. Deadly force is ONLY allowed when imminent threat to oneself or another person is present. If the Sheriff’s Deputy shot the man for being on a roof, the Deputy would be in jail himself. As difficult as it may be for you, try to admit you are wrong instead of just continuing to dig yourself into a bigger hole of ignorance.

To Mediaman, What is the matter with you. You complain that law enforcement chased this idiot. What should have they done, let him go? He attempted a kidnapping and threatened to kill another person. The officers involved in this did their job and a good job. And then the idiotic statement that they should have shot him on the spot before he got to Salina, you better check the law, Police CAN NOT shoot at people who run from them unless they are threatening them or another with great bodily harm or death in their presence.
And as for Sick of the Crybabies comment. He is right most people who post on here complain about law enforcement right-or-wrong they have to complain.

To Sick of the Crybabies, its online conversation. You take this way to serious if you are the first person to post on the comment.

Mediaman says….
I’m not saying why did they chase him, I am asking why they did not shoot him right then and there. You know cops can shoot people that run from them. You know the words, say it with me…Stop or I will shoot! Should have dropped him right there and that would have saved time money and not taken this to the streets of salina.

Well, to those that criticize and complain that law enforcement officers are not doing their job…go apply and become one. You can then be the “superman” who would have stopped the chase before city limits and taken him into custody without a single shot fired. You can then be praised as our saviour and hero! Whatever…had that guy wronged you, you would complain if the chase was called off. There is no pleasing the ignorant and uninformed people of this city.

Proud says….
It’s not a matter of KHP or other LEO “doing wrong” or “allowing” this to happen! Are you kidding me? They do not have super-hero powers, believe it or not they are normal, regualr people who took it upon themselves to take a job protecting all of you! I guarantee you they did everything in their power. All steps and measures were taken. I know that no one posting here could have done a better job. Thank God for our local law enforcement!

to “sick of the Crybabies” oh the criminal did wrong and he should have been taken out, but the KHP and others also did wrong when they allowed this person to get in the car and take it to the streets of Salina. They should have been smart enought to stop it before it started or at least not let it enter into another town.

To all the posters that think “sick” needs to get a job or life or whatever, maybe you should look at other articles regarding law enforcement. For a while now, about 85% of the posts have said how the PD or SO or KHP were in the wrong doing their jobs. Pull a gun on an officer, expect to get shot. Run from them, expect them to arrest you.
To Mediaman, I’ve not seen anything that this was a “high speed” chase. The only speed I’ve seen was that he was going 40 on S 9th into the city. Pretty sure that’s the speed limit. I mean, unless I missed a change? So how was this so different from typical traffic? Yeah, he ran ONE red light, but I’m sure people run red lights more than we think…

Another reckless chase through the streets of Salina. Cops are supposed to serve and PROTECT, how can they do that when they are putting the lives of drives at risk? What would have happened if the car they were chasing plowed into an innocent family killing the parents and or children? When will this end SPD? When will you stop putting innocent people in danger?
Is this what I pay taxes for, so that the police can do whatever they want on the streets and hide behind the badge saying they were just doing their job?
YOUR JOB IS TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE OF SALINA, NOT PUT THEM IN RISK OF BEING KILLED

Thank you law enforcement officers for the job you do !! Sorry the state doesn’t pay you what you deserve, thank you for putting yourself and your families at risk for the public everyday ! Bless you !!

I think its time people who brandish guns while engaging with law officers should understand what can happen. Officers want to go home to. Use guns for what they were made for.

“Sick of the Crybabies” aren’t you jumping the gun a bit on your comment? No one has made any negative comments towards the KHP. I think they handled the situation professionally and am thankful no one was more seriously injured. It could have turned out much worse than it did.

I’m with “sick of the crybabies,” sick of how people think the criminal is in the right. I commend all law enforcement officers, no matter the department, for all they do because I certainly couldn’t do it! People don’t run from law enforcement for fun.. so what was this guy trying to hide??
