Buford, C.J. Henry leaving KU basketball team

By The Associated Press

LAWRENCE — Guards Chase Buford and C.J. Henry have left the Kansas basketball team, with Henry planning to pursue his basketball career somewhere else.

Coach Bill Self announced the departures of the two walk-ons Wednesday. Self said Buford plans to remain at Kansas to pursue his degree.

Henry transferred to Kansas from Memphis last year to join his brother Xavier, who jumped to the NBA after playing his freshman season. C.J. Henry played in 13 games for the Jayhawks as a redshirt freshman, averaging 5.6 minutes and 3.1 points.

Flying friendly skies suits Perkins

By The Associated Press

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins billed the athletics department more than $150,000 for 22 flights on university-owned and leased planes from July 2008 to May 2010, far more than his counterparts at Kansas State and Missouri spent during the same period.

That doesn’t include 23 other private flights he took during that time, The Kansas City Star reported in a story Sunday.

According to the newspaper, which examined Perkins’ travel vouchers, the Kansas official also spent thousands of dollars on car services, rather than renting vehicles at much lower rates.

From wire reports

LAWRENCE — Most head football coaches inherit a situation that is less than ideal when they change jobs and take over a failing program.

Turner Gill’s mess at Kansas was worse than most. The Jayhawks not only ended the season on a seven-game losing streak, but spent the final weeks embroiled in an embarrassing imbroglio regarding head coach Mark Mangino.

By MATT TAIT | Lawrence Journal-World

LAWRENCE — Wednesday marked the college football debut for 15 incoming freshmen at Kansas University.

And although the upperclassmen did their best to help the newcomers break in with style, a few of the older Jayhawks couldn’t help but find entertainment in the rookies’ struggle to catch on during their first official day with the team.

“You want to help the freshmen as much as you can,” third-year sophomore quarterback Kale Pick said. “But it’s also kind of funny to point one out and look at them lookin’ around with their heads swimmin’.”

Bobcats bring in Collins to help with PG depth

By MIKE CRANSTON | AP Sports Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For now, the Charlotte Bobcats are trying to overcome the loss of starting point guard Raymond Felton with numbers.

The Bobcats added their third point guard to the roster on Friday by signing undrafted rookie Sherron Collins to a two-year, non-guaranteed deal. Collins, who starred at Kansas, played well for the Bobcats’ summer league team last month.

“Sherron had a productive summer league and showed some of the qualities he displayed while at Kansas,” general manager Rod Higgins said. “He has a competitive nature as well as coming from a very successful program. He’s going to have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot.”
