K-State’s Brown better suited to play defensive tackle

By ARNE GREEN | Salina Journal

MANHATTAN — At first, Joe Bob Clements was simply looking for some help.

As Kansas State’s defensive ends coach, he knew the Wildcats lacked depth on the line and saw something in Prizell Brown that fit what they were looking for.

“It was the beginning of camp last summer,” said Brown, who had arrived just weeks earlier from Blinn College in Texas, expecting to play tight end. “Coach Clements talked to me and he asked me, ‘What would you think about putting your hand in the dirt.’

Basketball: K-State to meet Virginia Tech in ESPN’s Tip-Off Marathon

Special to the Journal

MANHATTAN — Kansas State will be a part of ESPN’s third annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon on Tuesday, Nov. 16, as the Wildcats will host Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. CT.

The Wildcats and Hokies will be one of 12 live college basketball games in 24 consecutive hours on ESPN for the second straight season. Overall, the marathon will include 20 live games – 19 men’s and one women’s – in a minimum of 25.5 hours across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. ESPN3.com will offer two exclusive games as well as a simulcast of every ESPN and ESPN2 telecast. The marathon will start at 11 p.m. CT on Monday, Nov. 15 with Miami playing Memphis on ESPN and will also include Big 12 foe Baylor hosting LaSalle at 1 p.m. CT.

“This is going to be yet another difficult opponent on our non-conference schedule,” said head coach Frank Martin. “Virginia Tech is a veteran ball club with one of the elite guards in the country in Malcolm Delaney. It’s going to be important for our fans to again make Bramlage Coliseum a difficult place to play.”

‘Playmaker’ Banks impressing Redskins coaches

By The Associated Press

ASHBURN, Va. — Brandon Banks has a bloodline for speed to offset a body not meant for football.

The undrafted Washington Redskins rookie is no longer just a long shot to make the team, not after his 77-yard punt return for a touchdown against Buffalo on Friday. The 5-foot-7, 151-pound receiver out of Kansas State flashed his 4.24-second speed down the right sideline before performing hometown buddy John Wall’s signature dance in the end zone.

Yet, Banks is barely the fastest person in his family.

Back to learn

By ARNE GREEN Salina Journal

MANHATTAN — DeMarcus Robinson showed up at Kansas State earlier this summer determined to get an education.

To make sure it happened, the Wildcats’ top-rated high school recruit was more than willing to check both an impressive football resume, and his ego, at the door.

“My job right now is just to come in and learn the offense as much as I can, learn how I can become a better player and just learn from Daniel (Thomas) and all the other players,” said Robinson, an all-state freshman running back from Wichita Northwest High School. “I’ve just got to go and learn from all the backs and see what I can do to critique my game to make myself better.”
