ELLIS WINS SINGLES — Sacred Heart’s Sydney Ellis went 3-0 to capture first place in the singles division Saturday at the Sacred Heart Invitational. Ellis was the only Sacred Heart entry in the tournament.
Ellis, a junior, opened with an 8-2 victory over Wabaunsee’s Chelsey Reves, then defeated Russell’s Kelli Gudenkauf in the semifinals, 8-5. Ellis capped her title with an 8-1 victory over Rhett Brown of Russell in the championship match.
Russell’s Brittni Hayes and Desiree Branick took second in doubles play, falling to Wabaunsee’s Becca Chamberlin and Chelsea Degan in the finals, 8-3.
Volleyball
KNIGHTS WIN TITLE — At Herington, Sacred Heart completed a perfect 5-0 day with a 25-22, 25-18 victory over the tournament hosts Saturday in the championship match of the Herington Invitational.
The Knights went 3-0 in pool play with two-set wins over White City, Council Grove and Centre, then went to three sets to knock off Wichita Sunrise in the semifinals, 22-25, 25-6, 25-14. Sacred Heart is now 15-8 on the season.
Statistical leaders for the Knights included Autumn Slater (53 service points, 21 aces, 21 kills, six blocks), Kate Stein (25 kills, five blocks, 28 digs) and Amanda Laas (33 points, 10 aces, 28 kills). Sacred Heart also got 24 assists and 10 digs from Bonnie Boos, 26 points and 48 assists from Dallas Froome, 31 digs from Taylor Kack, 36 kills from Hannah Doll, and 26 points and 13 digs from Nicole Palen
SOUTHEAST TAKES FOURTH — At Lyons, the Southeast of Saline volleyball team went 2-1 in pool play Saturday to reach the semifinals of the Lyons Invitational, where the Trojans eventually finished fourth.
Southeast (6-14) picked up wins over Russell and Chase, before dropping its pool play finale against Pratt. With a chance to get in the tourney title match, the Trojans fell to Lyons in three sets in the semifinals, then were defeated by Ellinwood in the third-place match 25-18, 25-20.
McKenna White had 21 kills and eight stuff blocks for Southeast, with Georgia Hines adding 28 kills and Taylor Peterson 68 assists. Brooke Christie finished with 10 stuff blocks, Christine Russell had 35 digs and Carley Melander had 26 service points.
SOUTH GOES 1-3 — At Newton, the Salina South volleyball team went 1-3 and did not advance beyond pool play during the Newton Invitational on Saturday at Newton High School.
South (12-11) picked up its lone victory by dowing Hutchinson in three sets. The Cougars then lost three-set matches to both Andover Central and Newton, and fell to McPherson in two.
South’s Logan Antenen had 56 kills, 34 digs and 18 service points in the four matches, with Sally Thompson contributing 55 kills, 23 points, 10 aces and nine stuff blocks. Jessica Stonebraker had 19 service points and a team-high 66 assists, while Kelsi Baird had 42 assists, Taylor Karcher had 44 digs and Meghan Oliver finished with five stuff blocks.
