Jones, SE-Saline boys shine at regionals

Mariah Jones will be a busy young lady next weekend.

Jones, a junior at Ell-Saline, qualified in four events for the girls’ Class 2A state track meet next weekend in Wichita during regional competition Friday in WaKeeney.

She alone accounted for 36 points by winning the long jump (16 feet, 9 1/4 inches) and triple jump (36-11), and finishing second in the 200 meters (27.08 second) and 400 meters (1 minute, 1.47 seconds).

Competition in all six classes begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday and continues through Saturday at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State.

The Southeast of Saline boys also had a big day Friday at their Class 3A regional in Smith Center. The Trojans won the team championship and qualified athletes in seven events.

Ryan McMichael and Michael Helvey each won two events — McMichael the 110 hurdles (15.76) and 300 hurdles (40.79), and Helvey the long jump (22-1 1/4) and triple jump (43-8). Bryant Beneke captured the high jump (6-0) and was third in the long jump (43.8). All three ran legs on the Trojans’ 400 relay team that finished third and qualified in 44.78.

Drew Diederich, Cory Donley and Mark Riordan won two events each for the Sacred Heart boys, who placed third at WaKeeney. Diederich captured the 100 (11.50) and 200 (23.13), Donley the 1,600 (4:42.09) and 3,200 (10:10.57), and Riordan the triple jump (45-3/4) and long jump (21-9).

Hannah Doll won the 100 (13.49) for the Sacred Heart girls.

Salina Central will send a large contingent to the Class 5A meet. The Mustang boys finished third and the girls fourth in their regional meet at Emporia.

All three boys relay teams qualified, winning the 400 (43.58) and 1,600 (3:28.71), and placing second in the 3,200 (8:25.30). Devon James won the 100 (11.01) while Alex Williams took second in the high jump (6-2) and triple jump (43-6 3/4).

Sadie Suenram qualified in three field events for the Central girls, winning the discus (129-0), placing second in the javelin (121-10) and fourth in the shot put (35-8 1/2). Bre Bennett claimed the long jump (17-1/4) and was third in the triple jump (35-1 1/2). Calla Hill won the 400 (50.79), Taylor Swanson soared to victory in the pole vault (9-6), and Central won the 400 relay (50.79).

Megan Holloway led the Salina South girls at Emporia by winning the 800 (2:23.19). Taylor Goodness will compete in two events after placing second in the high jump (5-4) and third in the long jump (16-1 1/4).

The South boys qualified in four events. Tjay Frank was the top finisher Friday, taking second in the 300 hurdles (40.63).
