Only one Saline County school made a move when classifications for the 2010-11 school year were announced Monday by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
St. John’s Military will compete at the Class 4A level in postseason competition for the current year in all sports except football. Football classifications are released every two years and were announced last October for the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Classifications for all other sports are based on a school’s enrollment in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades. St. John’s Military’s enrollment number in those three grades was 138, but because the enrollment is limited to boys only, the Muleskinners numbers are doubled when determining classifications.
Salina South and Salina Central remain at the Class 5A level and neither appears likely to move in the near future. South’s enrollment is at 856 and ranks 8th among the 32 schools in 5A, while Central’s enrollment of 676 places it 19th out of 32. The 180-student gap is the largest between the Salina schools since the 2006-07 school year.
Southeast of Saline will remain at the 3A level, while Sacred Heart and Ell-Saline will once again compete at 2A.
Changes involving Salina Journal area schools include Lincoln moving from 1A to 2A for the current school year, while Stockton falls from 2A to 1A.
