Salina citizens are one step closer to voting on whether or not to fund the initial, $27.7 million phase of the Smoky Hill River renewal project with a 0.25 percent sales tax after Salina city commissioners approved a question Monday to be placed on the November election ballot.
“It is very critical the people of Salina have an opportunity to express how they feel about this,” Commissioner Tom Arpke said after the meeting. “I think the ballot box is the perfect place to do that.”
Commissioners are scheduled to conduct a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 30 to take final action on placing the question on the November ballot.
The sales tax expected to bring in between $25 million and $28 million over 10 years. While the cost for the entire project is estimated at $74.27 million, Friends of the River Foundation president Troy Vancil told the Journal that the full project could take up to 50 years to complete.
