MANKATO — A 100-year-old cottonwood tree on the Eldon and JoAnn Doud farmstead was blown over in a storm Sunday night that damaged property from Smith and Osborne counties through Jewell County.
The tree stood more than 60 feet tall, is 5 feet and diameter and 15 feet around, said JoAnn Doud.
The farmstead is 81/2 miles northwest of Mankato. The Douds received nearly an inch of rain and more than 4 inches since Saturday, Eldon said.
“There was some hail the night before last around Mankato and Formoso. It took out a lot of wheat,” Eldon said.
High winds took out several buildings, and damaged roofs in the area.
The Douds’ big tree missed their home by 10 feet, JoAnn said.
