HAYS -- Fort Hays State football coach Chris Brown announced the signing of 37 athletes for the upcoming season on Wednesday.

The list consists of 26 freshmen and 11 transfers.

Four signees are from the Journal's circulation area, all of them incoming freshmen -- Zach Binder, a defensive lineman from Hays, tight end/linebacker Jared Herl from Ellis, running back/defensive back Truitt Kuhlmann from Smith Center and defensive back Connor Rogers from Stockton. Binder, Herl and Kuhlmann were chosen to play in the Shrine Bowl.

Among the transfers is quarterback Tarean Austin, a native of Tampa, Fla., who played at New Mexico the past two seasons. He started six games, including the first four last fall, and completed 60 of 117 passes for 706 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 195 yards rushing on 59 carries.
