RILEY COUNTY INVITATIONAL -- The Southeast of Saline cross country team continues its late-season surge, as the Trojan boys were an easy winner of the team title Saturday at the Riley County Invitational.
Southeast had three of the top five individual finishes and totaled 38 team points. Riley County took second with 101 points, followed by Sacred Heart in third with 123.
The Trojans were led by seniors Max McClure and Trask Engel, who finished second and third, respectively. Southeast's Garrett Sager was fifth and Michael Bauer was 10th. The top finish for the Sacred Heart boys was Kyle Wasinger in 16th.
The Knight girls had a pair of top 10 finishes from sophomore Ally Balderston (4th) and junior Sarah Faerber (8th), helping Sacred Heart to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. The Southeast girls took second and were led by Tiffany Cleveland, but had their top five runners bunched together, finishing between 11th and 17th.
Girls tennis
3-2-1A SUB-STATE -- At Hillsboro, Sacred Heart's Moe Mikinski and Morgan Hale lost their opening matches and were eliminated in the Class 3-2-1A sub-state tennis tournament on Saturday.
Mikinski, the No. 2 seed, lost to seventh-seeded Jamie Gellerman of Sterling 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 while Hale, the eighth seed, fell to top-seeded Janel Prather of Sterling 6-4, 6-3.
Mikinski ends the season with a 22-4 record while Hale finishes 12-3.
The Knights did not have any doubles entries.
Volleyball
COUNCIL GROVE INVITATIONAL -- It was more of the same Saturday for the Sacred Heart volleyball team, as the Knights pushed their record to 34-0 with five victories at the Council Grove Invitational.
It was the fourth tournament title this season for the Knights, who defeated Clay Center in Saturday's semifinals, then downed Abilene in the title match, 25-21, 25-20. Sacred Heart, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, won its pool with two-set victories over Chase County, Santa Fe Trail and Council Grove.
Sacred Heart seniors Abby Wittman and Katelyn Schmidtberger were named to the all-tournament team, with Schmidtberger selected most valuable player.
Statistical leaders for the Knights included Wittman with 27 kills, 58 assists and 22 digs; and Schmidtberger with 47 kills, 42 assists and 10 blocks. Tayler Simoneau finished with 29 service points; Abby Simoneau had 23 kills and 16 digs; Stacey Newton had 30 service points and 16 kills; Alicia Wilkins added 15 kills and 18 digs; and Bonnie Boos had 13 digs.
Southeast of Saline went 0-3 in pool play.
MCPHERSON INVITATIONAL -- Salina South finished a full day with a 4-2 record and a third-place finish Saturday at the nine-team McPherson Invitational.
The Cougars went 2-0 in pool play with victories over Nickerson and Salina Central. South then picked up wins over Wichita Kapaun and Nickerson, before ending the day with back-to-back losses against Moundridge and Goddard. Both losses went the full three sets.
South (20-11) was led by Taylor Goodness with 79 kills, 14 blocks, 27 service points and 12 aces. Alexa Fritz had 70 assists, 31 service points and 30 digs; with Jenna Miller adding 62 digs and 35 service points. Sally Thompson had 30 kills and 14 blocks, with Logan Antenen adding 28 kills, and Jenna Wolf 71 assists.
Central finished seventh with a 2-3 record. After going 0-2 in pool play, the Mustangs came back with victories over Topeka High and Hutchinson, before closing the day with a 25-15, 28-26 loss to McPherson.
Central (12-18) received 41 kills, 16 service points and 81 digs from Meg Schwartz, and 31 kills and 49 digs from Arien Cox. The Mustangs also had 19 service points from Allie Myers; 19 kills and eight blocks from Maria Bujanda; six blocks from Sarah Vanier and 52 assists for Reagan Owen.
