Falcons get the day off

By the Salina Journal

The second day of the Kansas Grand Slam Tournament turned into a day off for the Salina Pestinger Falcons.

The severe weather that blew through Saline County on Friday night forced the postponement of the final two games, including the Falcons game at Matson Field against Olathe East.

That game and another matching the Midwest Bruins and Air Academy (Colo.) at Dean Evans Stadium have been rescheduled for Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

Tournament officials are hoping to start today's 12-game schedule -- six games at both fields -- as planned at 9 a.m., barring any additional heavy rains overnight. That would put the Falcons back in action at 5 p.m. today at Evans Stadium against Air Academy.

Salina went 1-1 on Thursday's opening day and will have three games remaining in the round-robin portion of the tournament.

After the first two days, the Midwest Bruins (2-0) and Air Academy (1-0) are the only remaining unbeaten teams. They are followed by Salina (1-1), Dodge City (1-2), McPherson (1-2) and Olathe East (0-1).

An updated schedule for the tournament's final two days can be found in today's Scoreboard, page C2.

Three games in the senior division were completed on Friday.

AIR ACADEMY 10, DODGE CITY 3 -- Playing its first game of the 2009 tournament, Air Academy scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open what had been a tie game.

Cameron Bobbit and Zach Gehler had RBI singles during that rally, and the Kadets took advantage of three Dodge City errors in the inning.

Air Academy, the tourney champion in its last visit to Salina in 2007, got two hits each from Gehler, John Tosches and Ryan Fountain. Brennan Flaherty went the distance for the Kadets, allowing five hits and striking out six

DODGE CITY 12, MCPHERSON 4 -- After winning its tournament opener against the Salina Falcons, McPherson dropped to 1-2 with its loss Friday against Dodge City.

After falling behind 5-0 after two innings, McPherson rallied to cut the deficit to one as Logan Rierson, Joey Dean and Tyson Anderson each had an RBI in their team's four-run third.

Dodge City scored the game's final seven runs, including six in the fourth to pull away. Aaron Heiland had three hits, while Jason McClaren drove in five runs and Winston Hines went 2 for 2 with three RBI.

MIDWEST BRUINS 5, OLATHE EAST 0 -- The Bruins used a solid pitching effort from Cody Schumacher and got four runs in the final two innings to hold off Olathe East.

Schumacher pitched a complete game two-hitter, facing one batter over the minimum and striking out 10 without walking a batter.

Leadoff hitter Bryce Williams went 4 for 4, including a solo home run, with Tyler Bailey adding a pair of doubles for the Bruins.
