WICHITA -- The path followed by the Salina South football team during the 2009 season has included its share of twists and turns, but the Cougars never lost sight of their intended destination.

Jamie Cruce knows precisely what his Bethany football team must avoid to have a chance today against nationally-ranked Ottawa.
"We're going to have to take care of the football and not turn it over at the rate we have been," Cruce said of the Swedes' 1:30 p.m. Kansas Conference contest against the unbeaten and No. 7-ranked Braves in Ottawa.

Kansas Wesleyan cornerback Kendrick Mitchell handled last week's challenge against Ottawa just fine.
Another taller challenge -- literally -- awaits him today when the Coyotes entertain Kansas Conference foe Friends. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m. at Salina Stadium.

BROOKVILLE -- Life doesn't always give you a second chance, but some of the Ell-Saline Cardinals are getting one tonight.
The 2008 Ell-Saline football team had its unbeaten season end with a second-round loss to Ellis in the Class 2-1A playoffs. The Cardinals -- at least the returning players from last year's team -- will get another chance at the Railers when the two schools meet in another second-round contest at 6 p.m. today at the Ell-Saline High School field.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos' 6-1 start puts them among the league's elite. Their inability to score on their opening drive, however, places them among some dubious company.
The Broncos have been outscored 39-24 in the first quarter and they've trailed at halftime four straight weeks. They learned Sunday at Baltimore that they can't keep counting on their second-half surges to carry them.
Kansas Wesleyan soccer coach Mike Dibbini could barely contain himself after watching Ryan Ingrassia and Daniel Blevins sign letters of intent with the Coyotes on Thursday.
"We're excited to have them and actually proud to have them," Dibbini said of landing the two Salina Central High School standouts." Hopefully, it opens a door for us. That's a big leap right there for Salina natives that have that much impact in soccer to take a step toward Kansas Wesleyan."
Ingrassia, a talented forward, and Blevins, a skilled midfielder, will join Dibbini's nationally recognized KWU men's program next fall.
