Selfless spirit: Salina Central, McPherson earn KSHSAA honor for support of Salina South's McKenzie Haynes

By LARRY MORITZ Salina Journal
When the girls basketball teams from Salina Central and McPherson wanted to show support for McKenzie Haynes, their respective gestures were never designed to bring attention to themselves.

Both the Mustangs and Bullpups wore specially designed t-shirts bearing McKenzie's name during pre-game warmups when they played Salina South in December contests. Haynes, a South junior and three-sport athlete for the Cougars, is sitting out the 2011-12 season after she was diagnosed with Refractory Anemia with Excess Blasts Type I and received a bone marrow transplant in late September.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced this week that Central and McPherson are co-recipients of the 2012 KSHSAA Spirit of Sport Award, designed to recognize "values inherent in high school sports beyond winning and losing."

KWU women knock off conference co-leader Southwestern

Salina Journal

Shelby Babcock couldn't believe what her coach, Gordon Reimer, was saying during Wednesday's practice session in advance of Kansas Wesleyan's crucial Kansas Conference game Thursday against No. 17-ranked Southwestern.

"(Wednesday) was a tough practice,'' Babcock said. "Every mistake we were getting yelled at. He said if we don't play hard we're going to get beat by 50. You take that to heart. 'We're not going to lose by 50, coach.' I think that really motivated us. We never want that to happen.''

KWU men snap 19-game losing streak, upend Southwestern

Seth Smith didn't quite know what to say. But the smile on his face said plenty.

So did the scoreboards in Mabee Arena.

Sharp-shooter Stutzman, inside game of Brazelton, Brown send Sterling past Bethany men

LINDSBORG -- Trenton Stutzman continued his shooting roll of recent weeks Thursday night as the 6-0 Hutchinson senior splashed nine 3-point goals on his way to 33 points as he shot the Sterling Warriors past Bethany, 87-66, in Hahn Gym.

But Stutzman wasn't all that the Warriors turned loose on the Swedes. When Stutzman wasn't draining the long ball from NBA range, Cody Brazelton and Adam Brown were doing it inside, combining for 34 more points.

"It's a nice inside-outside combination," said Dean Jaderston, Sterling coach. "Trent can stretch the floor which means it's hard for the doubles (teams) to come. (Brazelton and Brown) are so athletic they can play above the rim or they can get to the rim from the perimeter."

Brown Mackie turns back Penn Valley behind Brown, Mughmaw, Rideau

Salina Journal

When Penn Valley made one final run at Brown Mackie and the Lions needed a steady hand, they turned to sophomore guard James Brown.

The rest of the time, Adam Mughmaw and Thaddeus Rideau provided all the necessary firepower.

Selfless spirit: Salina Central, McPherson earn KSHSAA honor for support of Salina South's McKenzie Haynes

When South opened the season against McPherson back on December 2, the Bullpups took the court wearing t-shirts with "Got Marrow?" on the front and "Team Kenzie" on the back. The team also raised funds and presented the Haynes family with the proceeds to help cover some of the travel expenses they've incurred.

Jayhawks gettin' Withey with it; KU bounces Baylor, 68-54

By STEPHEN HAWKINS Associated Press
WACO, Texas -- Whatever Tyshawn Taylor and the rest of his Kansas teammates did to motivate 7-foot Jeff Withey certainly worked.

"In practice every day, punching him in his chest, jumping on him, trying to get him fired up," Taylor said. "He came out and played amazing."

Withey, coming of a scoreless game, rebounded with a career-high 25 points for the seventh-ranked Jayhawks in another convincing victory over sixth-ranked Baylor, 68-54 on Wednesday night, to regain a share of the Big 12 lead.

"I don't know why Withey likes playing against us so much, but he looks like an All-American when he does," Baylor coach Scott Drew said.

On Wednesday night they finally fixed that problem.

Tiger Woods creates buzz at Pebble Beach

San Francisco Chronicle

CARMEL, Calif. -- Tiger Woods showing up at the Pebble Beach AT T Pro-Am after 10 years away creates a buzz. It's kind of like Elvis (if he were alive) showing up to perform at a convention of Elvis impersonators.

Ticket sales for the tournament are up 30 percent to 35 percent, officials say. Their quirky little event is the center of the golf world this weekend, because, you never know, this could be the rebirth of Woods' legend.

CLEVELAND -- Chauncey Billups will only watch as the Clippers continue their promising season without him.

This isn't going to be easy.

Memphis is final piece for coast-to-coast Big East

AP College Football Writer

The Big East has acquired all the pieces needed to build a new coast-to-coast conference. Putting them all together, though, is going to take a while.

The conference wanted to rebuild itself into a 12-team football league that can hold a championship game, and Memphis officially became that 12th member on Wednesday when it accepted an invite it has long coveted.

Reimer: KW's closing stretch is 'brutal'

Salina Journal

Kansas Wesleyan's postseason aspirations will be greatly impacted during the final 10 days of the Kansas Conference regular season, starting tonight with a game against conference co-leader Southwestern at Mabee Arena. Tip-off is 6 p.m.

The Coyote women are tied with Sterling for third place at 9-5. They play McPherson (8-6) on Saturday at Mabee Arena and close out the regular season next week with games at Friends (12-2) on Feb. 16 and Ottawa (8-6) on Feb. 18.

Knights bounce Russell, improve to 5-4 in NCAA; SIT failures fading quickly

Salina Journal

RUSSELL -- Only eight days ago the Sacred Heart boys were unsure which direction their basketball season was headed.

After three wins in as many games during that time, the Knights hope they have a better idea of what lies ahead.

Baylor looks to even score against KU in battle of top-10 teams

Associated Press

WACO, Texas -- Baylor coach Scott Drew was talking about the challenge of facing Kansas again and what to do differently this time when Brittney Griner, the 6-foot-8 blocking phenom for the top-ranked Lady Bears, briefly walked into the room.

Somebody jokingly asked Drew if she might be his secret to countering Kansas forward Thomas Robinson.

Kansas State defeats Texas Tech 65-46

By the Associated Press

MANHATTAN -- It's not very often a coach wins a conference game by 19 points and begins his postgame radio show by apologizing to the fans "for a lack of focus and enthusiasm."

That was the case Tuesday night for Kansas State coach Frank Martin, whose Wildcats defeated Texas Tech 65-46 to keep the Red Raiders winless in Big 12 play. The teams combined for 26 field goals, the lowest total in Bramlage Coliseum's 24-season history.

"After warmups, my assistants came in and warned me this might not be a very fun night," Martin said. "We had no emotion."

Ell-Saline sweeps Marion

The Cardinals, ranked No. 10 in Class 2A, darted out to a 20-5 first-quarter lead and had little trouble keeping the Warriors at bay, improving to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the league. Marion fell to 2-14 overall and 1-5 in the HOA.

Junior guard Emily Work, the Cardinals' top scorer on the season at 15.4 points per game, led the way with a game-high 18, including four 3-pointers. Brittany Clancy added 12.

Megan Richmond led the Warriors with nine points.
