Blue Jays Love Peanuts
Submitted by: Mark Neubrand
Blue Jays are a big fan of peanuts. The Salina Audubon Society sells raw peanuts for back yard bird feeders. The Blue Jays love to wrestle them out of the feeder and fly off to perch and chip them out of the shell. They are also notorious for hiding them all over the yard for later feasting.

Education Commissioner visits Clifton-Clyde School District
Submitted by:
The Kansas State Department of Education Commissioner, Dr. Diane DeBacker, visited the USD 224 Clifton-Clyde School District for the first time on Thursday, Feb. 4th. During the visit, Dr. DeBacker met students and staff in all three of the Clifton-Clyde Schools. She also got a chance to meet and take a picture of Mrs. Schurle''s 4th graders who scored the highest collective score in the state on their Kansas Math and Reading Assessments as 3rd graders. Dr. DeBacker had heard about the high academics of USD 224 after the district won the "Highest Performing Academic School District in Kansas Award" from KSDE and the Kansas Legislature in November of 2009. (As a district in academics, the grade school placed 1st in the state, the middle school placed 2nd, and the high school placed 14th.) During the visit, she commended the staff and students for their high academics and their recent environmental education initiatives. Although Dr. DeBacker does not typically tour many school districts during the year, she made a point to visit all of the students and staff at USD 224 Clifton-Clyde in order see the high academics in action.
