ELL-SALINE SECOND IN REGIONAL -- At Galva, Ell-Saline came within one inning of qualifying for the Class 2-1A state tournament.

Canton-Galva scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and defeated the Cardinals 3-2 in the championship game of their regional tournament. Ell-Saline advanced to the title with an 8-6 upset victory over top-seeded Moundridge.

Canton-Galva, the No. 2 seed, strung together three singles and was aided by an Ell-Saline error in the seventh inning. Canton-Galva (18-5) will play in the 2-1A state tournament next week in Emporia.

Vince Froome pitched a complete game for Ell-Saline, striking out five, in the title game. Ted Regehr was the winning pitcher.

Ell-Saline bolted to an 8-2 lead against Moundridge and held on in the seventh inning as the Wildcats rallied for four runs. Moundridge entered the game with a 19-2 record.

Levi Debold was the winning pitcher, striking out six in six innings. Devin Brown pitched the seventh.

Froome, Ryan Sprinkle and Dalton Estep had three hits each and Lance Nelson two for Ell-Saline, which totaled 15 for the game.

Ell-Saline ends its season with a 12-11 record

NEWTON 4, SALINA CENTRAL 1 -- At Great Bend, Newton scored three runs in the first inning and pitchers Alex Koerner and Sean Kelly took over from there for the Railroaders in their Class 5A regional tournament game.

Central was its own worst enemy, committing three errors in the inning to go along with a walk and two hits. The Mustangs had four errors in the game while Newtom committed three.

Koerner and Kelly held Central to two singles, Koerner getting the victory and Kelly the save. Central scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning, but Newton answered with a run in the top of the fourth.

Wyatt Hall was the losing pitcher. He allowed three singles and struck out four in pitching a complete game.

Central finishes the season with a 10-11 record.

McPHERSON 8, SALINA SOUTH 1 -- At Hays, six errors and McPherson pitcher Sam Stucky were a bad combination for South in its Class 5A regional game.

Stucky pitched a five-hitter and the Cougars committed six errors in their loss in their tournament opener. McPherson parlayed the six errors into three unearned runs.

Tanner Vinson had two of South's hits, going 2 for 4 -- one of them a home run in the first inning.

South led 1-0 until McPherson tied it 1-1 in the fourth and broke it open with six runs in the fifth.

Evan Myers took the loss. He pitched four innings, str uck out two and walked one.

Blake Tillman homered for McPherson, which defeated Hays 3-2 in the championship game.

The Cougars finish the season with a 6-15 record.
