By the end of the day, several Saline County baseball and softball teams will know whether their season is complete or if it will end with a state tournament appearance next week.
The Salina South and Salina Central baseball and softball teams will begin postseason competition today, with the softball teams going head-to-head at South High, while the baseball teams head to separate regional sites.
The South and Central softball teams will play one another in a Class 5A regional semifinal at 3:30 p.m. today at the South High diamonds. The winner advances to the regional championship game and will face either McPherson or Hutchinson in the final.
South (17-3) comes in as the tournament's top seed and will attempt to earn a seventh consecutive state tournament appearance. Central (0-19) lost to South twice earlier this season.
The Central baseball team will compete in a 5A regional today at Al Burns Field in Great Bend. The Mustangs (10-10) open against Newton (9-11) in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal.
The winner of that game advances to the regional championship at 7 p.m. and will take on either Great Bend or Topeka West.
South will play its 5A baseball regional today at Hays High School. The Cougars (6-14) take on McPherson (15-5) at 4:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the regional title game at 7 p.m. to meet either Hays or Emporia.
Regional softball champions in 5A advance to next week's state tournament at Wichita's Two Rivers Youth Complex. Regional baseball champs in 5A move on to the state tournament starting May 23 at Wichita's Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Sacred Heart baseball and Southeast of Saline softball teams will also open postseason play today, after both received first-round byes in their respective tournaments Monday.
The Knights (14-2) will play in the Class 3A regional at the Marion Baseball Complex and face Lyons (8-11) in today's semifinals at 2 p.m. The winner advances to the regional championship at 7 p.m.
The Southeast softball team (15-5) faces Republic County (8-13) in today's 3A regional semifinals starting at 4:30 p.m. at Bill Burke Park. The winner of that game will play in the regional championship at 6:15 p.m. against Beloit or Sacred Heart.
