Officials seek car seen near homicide scene

By SHARON MONTAGUE

Salina Journal

PORTIS -- Law enforcement officials are seeking information about a blue, four-door car seen near the scene of a homicide Tuesday afternoon.

Tony Weingartner, an agent with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, said a person was found dead Tuesday afternoon at a rural Osborne County residence, near Portis, and the home had been burglarized. Authorities believe the crimes were committed between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday.

He wouldn't say when or how the victim was discovered.

Weingartner also wouldn't identify the homicide victim in any way -- even to give the person's sex or age -- saying it "could be detrimental to the investigation."

Weingartner said someone saw a blue, four-door passenger car, with an off-colored fender, leaving the scene of the homicide. The trunk of the vehicle was ajar.

"The occupants of that car are wanted for questioning in a series of burglaries and the homicide of a resident of a place that was burglarized," Weingartner said.

He wouldn't say how many people officials think were in the car, nor whether they are thought to be male or female.

Weingartner did, however, discount rumors that the people wanted for questioning had escaped from a correctional facility.

"I have no knowledge of anyone escaping from anywhere," Weingartner said. "That's news to me."

Anyone with any information about the vehicle may call the Osborne County Sheriff's Office at (785) 346-2001, or the Kansas Bureau of Investigation tip line, 1-800-KS-CRIME.

"We're wanting to get some feedback from the public," Weingartner said.
