Beulah M. Appleby
CONCORDIA -- Beulah M. Appleby, 90, died Sept. 1, 2008, Cloud County Health Center, Concordia. She was born March 26, 1918, NE of Hollis, Kansas, to Harry Smock and Alice Christie.
She attended Seapo School in Republic County. She married Delbert Dunphy on July 27, 1936, in Clay Center. He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1959. She later married Esthyle Appleby on May 29, 1961, in Belleville. He preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1989. She worked as a private housekeeper for over 23 years. She was a lifelong Cloud County area resident.
Survivors include daughters, Dixie Blazek, Munden and Delores Woolard, Concordia; stepson, Arlen Appleby, Glasco; stepdaughters, Marsha Smith and Cindy Appleby, both of Glasco; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by husbands, Delbert Dunphy and Esthyle Appleby; her parents; and brothers, Cecil and Lee Smock.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Chapel, Concordia, with Pastor L. Dean Thompson, with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia.

TROY, Mich. -- Douglas Dean Bass, 62, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008. He was born in Marion, Kansas, the son of Carl and Bessie (Conyers) Bass. He is survived by his mother; his children: Amee (Gregory) Beznis, Sara Bass and Carl (Heather) Bass; siblings: Carlita (Bill) Erickson and Robert (Laura) Bass; and three grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion, KS. The family will greet friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. Ella Adalla Chancy, 86, Salina, died Sept. 1, 2008. She was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Upton, WY. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Burkholder, in 1967, and her second husband, Pearl Chancy, in 1981; her parents, Myron A. and Ina F. (Norris) Price; two brothers, John A. Price, Glen O. Price; a sister, Myra Price; and a stepson, Richard Burkholder.
Survivors include two sons, Carl A. Burkholder of Culver and James R. Burkholder of Salina; two brothers, James E. Price of Salina; Melvin R. Price of Iola; and a sister, Lillie Norman of Salina; 17 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday Sept. 4, 2008, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 E. Crawford, Salina, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, 304 W. Grand Ave., Salina. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

ABILENE -- Betty Lee Johnson, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008. She was born on April 16, 1924, to Arthur and Folsom Mamie Strong in Morland. She was a former longtime resident of Hill City. She was a teacher/homemaker.
She married Eugene V. Johnson, May 7, 1941. He died May 8, 2006.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Frank; and two brothers.
Survivors include a son, Larry Johnson of Litchfield, AZ; daughter, Charlene Cook, Abilene; brothers, Don Strong of Mountain View, AR, and Bob Strong of Dighton; and two grandsons, Matthew and Ben Cook.

MARION -- Betty R. Kemerling, 84, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008. She was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Newton, the daughter of William and Martha Kelsey Coulson. She was a homemaker and lived in Marion for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Richard Kemerling of Rush Center; a daughter, Vicki Johnson of Marion; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Bernard Charles Larue
OBERLIN -- Bernard Charles Larue, 75, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008. He was born Nov. 4, 1932, in rural Decatur County. He was a farmer and truck driver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Leta (Moore) Larue; and a granddaughter, Erin Leigh Weber.
Survivors include his wife, Joan, of Oberlin; son, Bruce and Marianna Larue of Oberlin; daughter, Charlene and Edward Weber of Ellis; and four grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin. Inurnment at Selden Cemetery, Selden. There will be no visitation.

GOODLAND -- Melvin L. Lohr, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Swedish Hospital in Denver, CO.
He was born on June 10, 1927, in Kanorado, KS. Surviving family includes his wife, Patricia M. Lohr, of Goodland; three children, Gwen G. Stormont of Littleton, CO, Kevin Lohr of Leesburg, VA, and Brad Lohr of Denver.

FREMONT, Neb. -- Dale A. Meritt, 61, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008. He was born Oct. 2, 1946, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was a retired educator and superintendent in the NE school system. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott.

SMITH CENTER -- Naomi Rose Pixler, 85, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at the Smith County Long Term Care in Smith Center. She was born July 30, 1923, in Salem, KS, to Lloyd and Mattie (Myers) Pixler. She was a school teacher.
She is survived by a brother, Bill Pixler (Oleta) of Smith Center.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary in Smith Center, with Pastor Sharon Patton officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Salem, KS. Secundino "Tito" Romero
GOODLAND -- Secundino "Tito" Romero, 66, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born in Puerto DeLuna, NM, on Sept. 6, 1941. He married Darlene Eller in Clovis, NM, and moved to Goodland in 1967. Darlene died in 2006. He was employed by Mueller Grain for 15 years and most known as the Goodland Wal-Mart "greeter."
He is survived by a daughter, Linda of the home, and his pets.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. MT today in the Goodland Cemetery.

MARION -- Ruby M. Schroeder, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008. She was born Feb. 23, 1919, at Lake Charles, LA. She was the office manager for her husband's dental practice in Marion for over 40 years. She was married to Dr. Elmer K. Schroeder. He preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 2003. She was an active member of Eastmoor United Methodist Church and the Stitch and Chatter Club for many years.
She is survived by sons, Dennis of Peabody and Edsel of Marion; and a sister, Erma Ensz of Hillsboro.

Alice M. Sherman
ABILENE -- Alice M. Sherman, 61, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008. She was born Alice Bailey on July 22, 1947, at Batavia, NY.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1998; her father, George; a son, Milton; stepfather, Alfred Bauer; and stepsister, Loretta Buckley.
Survivors include two daughters, Beth Draper and Lorrie Brooks, both of Perry, NY; mother, Genevieve Bauer, Enterprise, KS; companion, Dean Haggard, Abilene; two brothers, Bill Bauer, Kipp, and Steve Bailey, Florida; a stepbrother, Daniel Bauer, Lima, NY; stepsister, Debbie Patrick, New York; and 7 granddaughters.

Roberta Maxine Oakley Simmons
BELEN, N.M. -- Roberta Maxine Oakley Simmons was born Sept. 13, 1925, on a farm in Scottsdale, Mitchell County, KS. She died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert L. and Mabel A. Oakley; and by her husband of 36 years, Robert K. Simmons. She is survived by her brother, Keith D. Oakley of Lawrence, Kansas; sisters, Ruth Bartow of Salina, Kansas, and Dorothy Miller of Oakley, Kansas; six nephews; and two nieces.
After graduating from Asherville High School in 1943, Maxine lived a short time in Beloit, Kansas, working for JC Penney's. Following wartime training, she taught all grades in a rural Kansas one-room schoolhouse. At the age of 20, and with her parents' permission, she married Robert Simmons in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Aug. 12, 1945. For a time, they lived on a farm in Mitchell County then moved to the Mountain States of New Mexico and Colorado in 1947. Prior to leaving Kansas, Maxine was active in the Union Sunday School and the Baptist Church.
In 1952, Maxine was working in Albuquerque for the Army Corps of Engineers, from which she retired as records manager in 1985. Also in the 1950s, Maxine worked as an interior decorator, joining her husband in Colorado in the construction business. Back in Albuquerque, Maxine and Bob were founding organizers of the New Mexico Buckskin Horse Association (NMBHA), keeping one or two horses of their own and attending shows in Bosque Farms, NM. She moved to Belen about 1998. Following Bob's death in 1981 and her retirement in 1985, Maxine devoted her energies to the National Active and Retired Federal Employees association (NARFE), serving in multiple offices for her local chapters (80 in Albuquerque and 1462 in Belen), and for the New Mexico Federation of Chapters. In 2007, she was the executive vice president for the NM Federation, and, until her death, was president of Belen Chapter 1462. She was recognized at the April 2008 NARFE NM Federation of Chapters Convention in Alamogordo for her "enduring and outstanding" contributions. Burial will be next to her husband at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by French Mortuary of Albuquerque. No services are currently planned. Mildred M. Wellbrock
VICTORIA -- Mildred M. Wellbrock, 87, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008. She was born March 31, 1921, in Victoria, to Joseph and Catherine (Berens) Wellbrock. She entered the Sisters of St. Agnes Convent in Fond Du Lac, WI, at the age of 16. She was later a teacher at Wichita State University.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 8 brothers, and 3 sisters. Survivors include a sister, Viola Repshire, Oakley; and two sisters-in-law, Leona Wellbrock, Victoria, and Doris Wellbrock, New Iberia, LA.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria. A vigil is at 8 p.m. Friday at Cline's Mortuary, 412 Main, Victoria. Visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, all at Cline's Mortuary, Victoria.

BURR OAK -- W. Laurence Wilson, 88, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; a son, Leslie; and 3 sisters, Pauline McMinimy, Alma Treffer and Barbara Drouhard.
Survivors include a son, William and his wife Linda of Burr Oak; daughter-in-law, Arylene Clark Wilson of Kansas City, KS; three grandchildren; two brothers, Daryl of Brevard, NC, and Robert of Burr Oak; and two sisters, Pat Wheeler of Tulsa, OK, and Dorcus Weltmer of Concordia.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Church of the Nazarene in Burr Oak, with burial in Burr Oak Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home, Red Cloud, NE, and Thursday from 11 a.m. to service time at the church.
