Jewell County lake to reopen to fishing

7/29/2008

JEWELL — Jewell County State Fishing Lake will reopen for fishing in September, as spring and summer rains have raised the water level nearly 14 feet.
Fisheries biologists plan to stock the lake with bluegill, largemouth bass and channel catfish. Special regulations will be in effect for the next few years, to establish the fishery and protect the new stock.
Drought conditions beginning in 2002 lowered the lake until it would no longer support good fishing. Because of the low water conditions in 2005, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks closed the facilities and gates were erected to prohibit vehicle traffic. Closing the facilities reduced maintenance costs and the threat of vandalism. In 2006, the water was drained, and all remaining fish were removed.
With the improved water level, the west gate will be opened to allow access to the boat ramp, courtesy dock and nearby camping areas. As the water level rises, additional areas will be opened.
