Memories overcame Bernice Schwartzman on Saturday morning as she ran to remember her daughter, Kelly Jackson.
"I can picture myself out there clapping for her; she enjoyed it so much," said Schwartzman, St. Louis.
She was among family, friends and classmates who ran for Kelly, who was shot by her husband, Tyke Supanchick, in Oregon just before Christmas 2005.
"It was tough," Schwartzman said. "I thought of her and started to cry. I couldn't cry and run at the same time."
The Kelly Jackson Memorial Walk/Run brought 65 runners to the Southeast of Saline High School cross-country course west of Gypsum.
The benefit raised $2,000 for the care and future of Kelly's 4-year-old daughter, Guin Jackson.
As a way to preserve Kelly's memory and help out, her Southeast of Saline class of 1998 organized the 5-kilometer run as part of their 10-year class reunion this weekend.
Kelly ran cross country in high school and was in a running club in Oregon, said Brandy Quinn, Hesston, a member of the class.
"We wanted something that would celebrate her life, so we decided on a run for her," she said.
Classmates also put together a memory book of photographs to help Guin know her mother.
"This is tremendous. I know she was loved," Howard Jackson, Topeka, said of his daughter. He walked the course and finished 49th.
Schwartzman was 25th.
Marci Jennings, DeSoto, who graduated from Southeast of Saline in 1997, was the top female finisher.
"If Kelly were here, she would probably beat me and would be laughing the whole way," Jennings said.
Daniel Craig, class of 1999, Gypsum, was the overall winner with a time of 16 minutes, 43 seconds.
The race attracted 18 members of the graduating class. More are expected to attend the reunion gathering today at Jerry Ivey Park, Salina.
"She was a friend to all, nice to everybody and had an infectious laugh," said classmate Todd Kohman, 28, Olathe.

The event served as closure for the family and classmates.
Supanchick was convicted April 18 of aggravated murder and sentenced April 24 to life in prison without parole, Schwartzman said.
Howard and Sue Jackson adopted Guin, Schwartzman said, "and they're doing a great job." She makes monthly 4Ôªø1รขÑ2 hour trips from St. Louis to Topeka to see her granddaughter.
The class of 1998 intends to sponsor other races in Kelly Jackson's memory, Quinn said.
"We thought about doing it as a part of a class reunion every five years," she said. "We'll have Guin back. Maybe she'll be old enough to participate in it when she's 9."
