Man from Canada killed in crash near Dorrance

DORRANCE -- A Canadian man, Bruce Foster Smith, was killed Saturday morning when he lost control of a pickup and collided with a tractor-trailer.

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers weren't sure if slick road conditions contributed to the crash.

Smith, 59, Edmonton Alberta, Canada, was driving a pickup west on Interstate Highway 70 at 7:29 a.m. when he lost control and crossed the median into the path of a semi driven by Francis K. Appiah, 50, Aurora, Colo.

The pickup and semi continued through an interstate barrier fence and came to rest on Old U.S Highway 40, which runs parallel to I-70. The crash occurred about two miles west of Dorrance.

The patrol said Appiah and a passenger, Mark Elwin Parmenter, 55, Aurora, had possible injuries, but neither were taken to a hospital. Both were wearing seat belts, the patrol said.

It was unknown whether Smith was wearing a seat belt.
