Robberies at rest area reported

COLBY -- Two people suspected of being involved in a robbery are hospitalized in Denver, and a third is in the Kit Carson (Colo.) County Jail following a Sunday morning chase on Interstate Highway 70 that began with a reported robbery at a highway rest stop.

According to the Thomas County Sheriff's Department, a 911 call about a robbery at the rest stop, located on the westbound lane at milepost 49, was received about 8:28 a.m. Sunday

John D. Stephens, 50, Colby, had been struck in the head with a blunt object and robbed while he was maintaining the rest-stop's rest rooms. He was taken by ambulance to Citizens' Medical Center in Colby, where he was treated and released.

Also, Deborah Hall, 37, Bartlesville, Okla., reported being threatened and robbed while in her vehicle at the rest area. Hall had four children, aged 4, 11, 15 and 16, with her at the time; neither she nor the children were injured.

A suspect vehicle, a gray/silver minivan, was located on I-70 in Sherman County by the Kansas Highway Patrol. The vehicle failed to stop, and the highway patrol gave chase.

Just east of Burlington, Colo, spike strips were used to stop the minivan. The pursuit continued into Burlington, where the minivan crashed.

Court panel doubts coercion claim

WICHITA -- A federal appeals court panel has denied a request for bail while an Oklahoma doctor appeals his conviction for conspiracy to unlawfully distribute prescription drugs through an Internet pharmacy.

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel noted in an order filed Monday that Dr. Wilbur Hilst's plea agreement contains a waiver of his right to appeal. The court says it is not expressing any opinion on the enforceability of that waiver.

But the court says it is not convinced that Hilst, Wewoka, Okla., is likely to succeed with his claim that his guilty plea was coerced because the government offered to drop charges against his wife if he pleaded guilty.
