Abilene Ellsworth water projects among those sharing $21.7 million

Projects in Abilene and Ellsworth were among 13 in Kansas to receive funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development's Water and Environmental Program.

The program on Friday announced $21.7 million in grants for rural water service and sewer projects in Kansas.

Ellsworth County Rural Water District No. 1 received $347,000 for modifications at the water treatment plant to bring the system into compliance with Kansas Department of Health and Environment requirements. The water district will contribute $42,134, and the district received a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant.

Red Bud Lake Improvement District in Abilene received $310,000 to help fund replacement of private septic systems with a centralized collection system. The project also will involve replacing water lines and resurfacing roads. The improvement district will buy water from the city of Abilene and sewage will be treated by the city.
