A Salina man accused of pelting Salina police officers with unopened cans of beer and setting a couch afire in a house Sept. 15 pleaded no contest Friday to misdemeanor charges.
Police said Marlin Wayne Greenwood, 39, 1309 Crescent, threw the beer cans at them when they arrived to investigate a report of an altercation at 519 N. 12th, then ran into the home. Greenwood set fire to a couch inside. When he refused to leave the burning house, officers fired a Taser, an electronic stun gun, at him and were able to remove and arrest him.
Greenwood originally was charged with arson, two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and obstruction. However, prosecutors amended those charges to two counts of misdemeanor property damage, to which Greenwood pleaded no contest.
District Judge Jerome Hellmer sentenced Greenwood to two consecutive one-year jail terms, but then suspended those sentences and ordered probation for one year with Court Services. Greenwood was ordered to pay restitution, which is expected to amount to about $4,000.
