The “Rat Reborn” won’t be a Hot Wheel, but it’s still a winner.

The 1931 green and purple-painted Chrysler four-door sedan, built by employees of Bright Built Hot Rods, 1100 E. Grand, took second place out of 12 finalists in the “Paint Your Ride” contest sponsored by Hot Wheels and PPG, a supplier of automotive, industrial and architectural finishes.

A panel of judges deliberated for more than two hours before choosing as the grand prize winner a 1956 sapphire-painted Chevrolet station wagon owned by Jim and Melinda Cooper of Laguna Hills, Calif.

“The judges said it was a really close decision,” said Keith Bright, the Salina hot rod’s co-owner. “Everyone was a winner. Hundreds of cars entered, and to be second out of 12 really is a great honor.”
