A fourth different attorney has been assigned to represent a Salina youth who’s been charged with attempted first-degree murder.
The problem has been trying to find an attorney who doesn’t have a conflict of interest in representing Cesar V. Ramos.
Wednesday, Salina attorney Karen Black was appointed to represent Ramos by Saline County District Judge Jerome Hellmer. With the change in representation, Hellmer rescheduled a hearing set for next week until Aug. 29 to give Black more time to prepare.
In the meantime, Black will review the extensive list of witnesses expected to be called to testify to make sure she has not represented any of them as an attorney.
Attorneys Julie McKenna and James D. Sweet, who were contacted by the Ramos family, and Bob Thompson, who was appointed in June by the court, all have been disqualified because each has represented at least one person on the witness list.
Attorneys who have had a relationship with a witness would have a conflict in cross-examining that person, because they might need to question the witness’ credibility, and because they might have knowledge of confidential information related to the witness.
Cesar Ramos and his brother, Juan P. Ramos, are charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the March 10 shooting of Torrean Hughley, 18. Hughley was shot numerous times while he was at Woodland Park in north Salina.
