Kansas Day to be celebrated Jan. 26

HANOVER -- The Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site will celebrate Kansas Day on Jan. 26 with refreshments and re-enactments.

Herbert and Alice Dyck will do costumed interpretations of Great and Sophia Hollenberg, builders and operators of the Hollenberg Station. Kyle Birkhofer, a sixth-grader, will portray Henry Kreiensieck, a German boy who lived with the Hollenbergs after he came to America in 1870 at the age of 14. Kreiensieck traveled by ship to New York, then by train to Waterville. The wooden box holding his belongings is on display at the station.

The station will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 26. Re-enactments are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the visitor center.
