Print this story An entire weekend of activities are planned in Salina in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday. The Salina Arts and Humanities Commission, along with the Smoky Hill Museum, are bringing jazz musician Lisa Henry of Kansas City, Mo., to perform in the lobby of the museum, 211 W. Iron, at 1 p.m. Saturday. There will be a community potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit. Drinks will be provided and everyone is asked to bring a dish to share. Sunrise Presbyterian is also scheduled to host a community celebration service at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Pastor Val Krehbiel of the Salina Mennonite Church is scheduled to be the keynote speaker. Henry and area choirs are also to perform. St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, 215 S. Chicago, is also slated to host a noontime memorial worship service Monday featuring performances by local youth groups. Also Monday, at Kansas Wesleyan University, there will be a special chapel service at 12:10 p.m. in the University United Methodist Church, Santa Fe and Claflin. The service is open to the public. The Reverend Louis Winn of the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church will speak, and the Wesleyan Philharmonic Choir will perform. The city of Salina, Saline County, and District Court offices will also be closed Monday. The city’s sanitation division will be providing regularly scheduled trash collection Monday, and the city landfill will be open regular hours. The Salina Public Library will be closed.
