Significant rain and some hail were reported in north-central Kansas overnight, but the area escaped the pounding that was felt in portions of southwest and central regions, according to the National Weather Service.
About an inch collected in gauges in Salina, with 1.17 inches measured at the municipal airport on the west edge of town and in Smolan just southwest of Salina. The Journal’s rain gauge showed 1.82 inches.
Peabody, in southern Marion County, reported 1.68 inches, according to the weather service.
Ellsworth received 0.91 of an inch. Hail up to the size of golf balls pelted northern Russell County, along with an inch of rain, and the city of Russell reported half an inch of rain, said a spokesman at the sheriff’s office.
Western Lincoln County received 0.40 of an inch.
Baseball size hail hit parts of Finney County in southwest Kansas, and 4 inches of rain splashed down five miles east of Greensburg.
More rain is predicted for the Salina area. There’s a 60 percent chance today and 70 percent tonight. Thunderstorms also are likely Wednesday.
