School district denied another exit for Lakewood

KAREN MIKOLS
Salina city commissioners Monday denied a request from the Salina School District to gain a second vehicle access from Lakewood Middle School to Lakewood Park Drive, located just east of the school.

The new driveway would eliminate some congestion for parents dropping off students, Ken Kennedy, director of operations for the Salina School District, told commissioners during Monday’s meeting.

“Traffic flow around Lakewood has been a problem since the opening of the building,” Kennedy said.

The new entrance would have let vehicles exit the school onto Lakewood Park Drive, and head south toward Iron Avenue. However, Lakewood Drive ia already in need of repair.

“It was an old gravel road with asphalt over it,” Director of Public Works Mike Fraser said. “It will deteriorate more quickly than a regular street.”
