Holmquist files for county commission

SMOLAN — Marlysue Holmquist, Smolan, has filed as a Democrat for election to the 3rd District Saline County Commission seat currently held by Republican Sherri Barragree.

Barragree has filed for re-election.

Deadline for filing for election is noon Tuesday. The general election is Nov. 4, and the primary election is Aug. 5.

Holmquist, a Saline County resident since 1981, was reared in a suburb of Los Angeles. She attended Bethany College.

Holmquist taught elementary school in Kentucky and Kansas. Since 1995, she has taught at Bethany College. From 2000-2007, she was chairperson of the Bethany College education department.

In a news release, Holmquist said that, having lived in both rural and urban environments, she can bridge the gap between the two.

“I am an informed resident who would listen and understand the concerns of all constituents in Saline County, both rural and city,” she said. Holmquist said she attended recent meetings at which county commissioners discussed bridges and road grids.

“Seeing the county commissioners at work and the broad, important issues they face each day, I felt I had the ability to contribute and represent all residents of Saline County, both city and country,” she said.
