One killed, five hurt in crash

HAYS -- One person was killed and five were injured in a four-vehicle crash about 3:45 p.m. Friday on a snow-slickened bridge.

The crash occurred on U.S. Highway 183 on the Saline River bridge in Ellis County.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Jeffrey A. Weber, 43, Plainville, Virginia L. Ray, 18, Stockton, and Thomas W. Williamson, 58, Billings, Mont., were all driving north on U.S. 183, and Christopher A. Kuhn, 24, Ellinwood, was driving south. The car Ray was driving slid left of center and into the southbound lane. Kuhn, who was driving a semi tractor towing a trailer, swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid Ray's car and his vehicle struck all of the other vehicles.

Kimberly M. Ray, 45, Stockton, who was a passenger in the Virginia Ray car, was killed in the crash. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the patrol report.

Virginia Ray was taken to Via Christi Regional Medical Center's St. Francis Campus in Wichita. Her condition was not immediately available. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

Heidi Dunning, 25, Stockton, who also was a passenger in the Ray car, was taken to Hays Medical Center, along with Kuhn and Carrie L. Williamson, 54, Billings, Montana, who was in the Thomas Williamson vehicle. Hospital officials would not give information about their conditions. All three were wearing seat belts, according to the patrol report.

Thomas Williamson, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he was in serious condition Saturday.
