Ell-Saline OKs student to wrestle for Minneapolis

MICHAEL STRAND
BROOKVILLE — Minneapolis and Ell-Saline high schools compete against each other on the gridiron and the basketball court, but they may end up cooperating on the mat, if an proposed agreement goes through.
At Monday night’s Ell-Saline School Board meeting, the board voted unanimously to pursue talks with the Minneapolis School District on a cooperative wrestling program, which would be set in Minneapolis but would include Ell-Saline students on the team.
Ell-Saline currently does not offer wrestling, and one student there is interested in the sport. There are more than two dozen such agreements in place in Kansas now, mostly among smaller, rural schools.
Superintendent Jerry Minneman noted that the board had addressed the issue in a less-specific way fewer than two years ago when the board decided not to pursue such agreements generally. But faced with a specific student, interested in a specific sport, board members gave the issue another go.
