A nickel for their thoughts

LINDSBORG — Smoky Valley High School junior Kate Emler didn’t have to look far to find a subject for her political action project. It was right on her social studies teacher’s T-shirt. Her teacher, Margo Lysell, wore a T-Shirt with the phrase “Save Darfur” printed on the front to a school event. Emler was shocked at how many people, and not just fellow students, had no idea what Darfur stood for. “People were joking around, wanting to know ‘Who’s Darfur?’ ” said Emler, 16. “It wasn’t just students, it was people in the community, too.”
For more on why the Smoky Valley students are interested in Darfar, read reporter Gary Demuth's story in Wednesday's Salina Journal.
