Two people were arrested on animal cruelty charges Saturday after Salina police found two dead cats and more than two dozen live cats in a debris-filled house at 906 Spruce.
Deputy Chief Carson Mansfield said a neighbor who smelled a strong odor of cat feces called police shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday.
Officers estimated there were 30 cats inside the house. Mansfield said officers with the Salina Animal Shelter captured about a dozen, but the rest couldn’t be caught.
“There were several wild cats, and they had created tunnels through the stacks of debris in the house,” Mansfield said.
Arrested were Starleta F. Keenan, 59, and her daughter Chelsea A.S. Weir, 17.
Mansfield said Keenan was renting the house, but she and her daughter had been staying elsewhere for the past couple of weeks.
