Cafe closed for nonpayment of taxes

TESCOTT -- The Kansas Department of Revenue has seized the assets and closed The Copper Penny Cafe in Tescott for nonpayment of state sales taxes.

The tax warrants from Nov. 2002 to Oct. 2003 and from Feb. 2004 to Jan. 2007 were for a total of nearly $180,000.

According to a Department of Revenue news release, the business is owned by Penny Ahlquist.

According to the Department of Revenue, assets are seized when other collection attempts -- including multiple letters, telephone calls, letters of impending legal action, tax liens and on-site till taps -- have been exhausted.

No one answered the phone at the business Thursday afternoon.
