Audubon Society sponsoring field trip

Audubon Society hosting field trip

Smoky Hills Audubon Society is sponsoring a field trip Saturday to Cheyenne Bottoms and the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge.

Field trips are open to everyone.

Participants should meet at 7 a.m. in the parking lot east of McDonald's, Sunset Plaza.

For more information, call Marge Streckfus, 825-7889.

New Dawn offers singing-grams

The Salina South High School New Dawn Singers will perform singing Mother-grams from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

For $20, the students will travel to a Salina address, sing to the designated mom and present her with a gift from Pettle's Flowers, 341 Center.

All profits will go to the South High vocal music department.

To order a Mother-gram, call Pettle's at 825-6265 or visit the store. Mother-grams can be reserved throughout the day.

Volunteers needed for food drive

Volunteers are needed between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday to assist with the Salina Letter Carriers' Food Drive.

Opportunities include assisting letter carriers in picking up food from individual mailboxes and delivering it to the Salina Post Office; helping unload, sort, weigh and reload food items at the post office; and unloading and stowing food at the Emergency Aid-Food Bank, 255 S. Chicago.

Pickup trucks and drivers also are needed to transport food items from the post office to the food bank.

Some lifting is involved in most activities.

To volunteer, or for more information, call The Volunteer Connection at 823-3128.

Red Cross to have fundraiser

Salina firefighters and nurses will join the North-Central Kansas chapter of the American Red Cross to raise money for its Hero Campaign from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 2900 S. Ninth.

The money goes into the chapter's general fund and is used for disaster relief and children's and educational programs, said Vicktoria Degand, chapter executive director. The Salina-based chapter covers Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Jewell, Mitchell, Osborne, Ottawa, Republic, Saline and Smith counties.

"Our local heroes are actually raising money for our Hero Campaign, which is kind of neat," she said.

The chapter is selling hot dogs and soft drinks with nurses from Salina Regional Health Center. Firefighters plan to collect money in their boots.

Red Cross disaster volunteers and the chapter's clown will attend to inform and entertain.
