More money might be headed Salina's way

GARY DEMUTH
The Smoky Hill Air National Guard Range might be about to build its second new facility in a year.

Smoky Hill was awarded $7.1 million Thursday through a military construction bill passed by the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, according to a news release from the office of Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan. The money would be used to build a new Range Support Facility at the guard range located just west of Salina.

It would replace the existing Range Support building originally constructed in 1968.

“This is a significant thing for us, because this building needed to be replaced,” said Lt. Col. Jeff Jordan, commander of Smoky Hill’s 284th Air Support Operations Squadron. “We didn’t have the space we needed available.”

The current building, originally built as a storage facility, has about 4,000 square feet, Jordan said. Plans are to demolish it and construct a 10,000-square-foot facility, one that will be used for air squadron training and classes, mission planning and debriefing.
