Summit to focus on healthy lifestyles

HAYS -- Promoting healthy lifestyles will be the focus of a two-day summit on the campus of Fort Hays State University from June 13-14. Sponsors are FHSU's Department of Health and Human Performance, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' HealthyKansas program and the Kansas Recreation and Parks Associations.

The summit will encourage physical activity, healthy eating and avoiding tobacco.

"This is a unique partnership between many organizations in the region that are committed to helping Kansans get more physical activity, eat healthy and avoid tobacco," said Sebelius. "We know that improving these three individual behaviors will have a positive lifetime impact on their health."

Friday is planned as a single-day workshop for professionals working in the region serving the three HealthyKansas target markets: children in schools, adults in the workplace and seniors in their community.

Cost for the Friday workshop is $30 per person.

A free community health fair on Saturday will offer the public resources on making healthy choices. It will include an opportunity to participate in the "What's Your Mile?" walking fitness test.

Roderick Bremby, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, will be the keynote speaker.

HealthyKansas was started in 2004 by Sebelius to encourage children in schools, adults in the workplace and seniors to take more responsibility for improving their health by increasing their level of physical activity, eating a better diet and avoiding tobacco.

The cooperative's last rate increase was in 2003, when it was granted a $600,000 rate increase.

Written comments should reference Docket No. 08-MDWE-594-RTS and may be e-mailed to public.affairs@kcc.ks.gov or mailed to the Kansas Corporation Commission, Office of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, 1500 SW Arrowhead Road, Topeka, KS. 66604. Customers also may contact the KCC's Office of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection toll-free at (800) 662-0027.
