Young children accused of burglary
Eight children between the ages of 5 and 15 are accused of burglarizing a Salina apartment and stealing more than $4,000 in cash.
Deputy Salina Police Chief Carson Mansfield said Stephen L. Everhart had just cashed his income tax refund check and left about $4,000 in cash in his apartment at 1310 E. North, No. 20.
Between 4:15 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mansfield said, someone got into Everhart's apartment -- possibly through an unlocked door -- and took the cash, some Pepsi and a Game Boy hand-held computer game system.
Mansfield said Everhart suggested the name of a person who might have stolen the items. Police questioned that person, and the investigation eventually led to the eight children, including two 15-year-old boys, a 13-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, an 11-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy.
Mansfield said the children had divided the money, but all but about $100 was found. The Game Boy also was recovered.
Mansfield said the 8-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy are too young to be charged with crimes, so they're being treated as children in need of care. Information about the incident will be forwarded to the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services for possible action, he said.
The other children were released to their parents, but referred to juvenile court on burglary and theft charges.
Salina man arrested on sex charges
A Salina man was arrested on numerous sex charges Tuesday in connection with incidents involving a middle school-aged girl.
Rafael R. Medina Jr., 33, 1716 Summers, is accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with the girl on March 7 at a south Salina location, according to Carson Mansfield, deputy Salina police chief.
Mansfield said the incident was reported to police within the past month.
