38-year-old killed after being pinned

LUDELL -- A 38-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening after falling out of the skid loader he was driving.

According to the Rawlins County Sheriff's Office, the man, whose name was not being released, was using the skid loader to clear a lot in Ludell when he lost control of the machine and fell out of the cab and became pinned between the arm of the loader and the frame.

A 911 call was received at 8:26 p.m., and several local agencies worked to free the man from the loader. He was taken to Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood, where he was pronounced dead.

Fort Scott residents try to beat 2 records

FORT SCOTT -- Hundreds of Fort Scott residents are spending time this week dropping pennies on the ground.

It's all an effort to break Guinness world records for the longest line of pennies and laying a mile of pennies in the fastest time.

The current record for laying the fastest mile of pennies is 2 hours, 24 minutes, 15 seconds, set in February by teachers and pupils in Rickmansworth, United Kingdom, said Kaoru Ishikawa, a records manager with Guinness World Records.

That effort began at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The second record in Fort Scott's sights is the longest line of pennies, currently 34.57 miles, set on Aug. 6, 1995, in Malaysia.

Members of the Fort Scott Youth Activities Teams and hundreds of other volunteers are trying to create a 40-mile continuous chain of pennies -- nearly 4 million pennies -- in the Fort Scott Middle School parking lot. The effort began Tuesday and will be judged by Ishikawa today.

It's all part of efforts to raise money for about $4 million in improvements at Ellis Park in Fort Scott.
