School board to consider bids to resurface South High track

Picking a contractor to resurface the track at Salina South High School may not be as easy as selecting the lowest bidder.

When the Salina School Board sits down at 5 p.m. Tuesday to decide which of two companies will get the contract, they'll have to choose between Iowa-based Fisher Tracks, which bid $52,723, and Oregon-based Atlas Track and Tennis, which bid $67,336.

The problem is, Fisher installed the original track just a few years ago, and the district is talking with the company about how much of the repair work should be covered by the original warranty.

District staff is recommending Fisher's bid, but "with the understanding that warranty allowances will be forthcoming. If Fisher is not willing to honor the warranty to a satisfactory level," the recommendation is that the contract instead be awarded to Atlas.

In other business, the board is scheduled to vote on a timeline for the Salina Area Technical College to become accredited by the Chicago-based Higher Learning Commission.
