Class 4A tennis: Dippel dominates

By the Salina Journal

PRAIRIE VILLAGE -- Smoky Valley has long been known for producing outstanding doubles teams. Now, for the first time in 36 years, the Vikings have a state singles championship to celebrate.

Smoky Valley's Chase Dippel finished his junior season with back-to-back victories Saturday to claim the Class 4A state singles title at Harmon Park Tennis Center.

Dippel, the tournament's top seed, defeated DeSoto's Matt Edwards in the semifinals to earn a spot in the 4A championship match against Kansas City Piper senior Santiago Padilla.

There Dippel defeated Padilla, a foreign exchange student from Ecuador, 6-2, 6-1, giving Dippel a record of 24-3.

The title enabled Dippel to become the school's first singles champions since 1972, when Bill Larson won the 3-2-1A singles division for Lindsborg.

Between 1977 and 2001, Lindsborg -- the school district changed its name to Smoky Valley in 1985 -- won 11 state doubles titles.

Dippel also advanced to the state semifinals in 2007 but lost his last two matches and finished fourth.

After falling to Padilla in Friday's quarterfinals, Abilene junior Logan Palenske came back with three consecutive victories to take fifth place.

Palenske, who finished the state tourney with a 4-1 record and was 32-7 this season, downed DeSoto sophomore Andrew Konetzni in Saturday's fifth-place match, 9-5.

Abilene also had a 10th-place finish in the doubles division from juniors Ben Geiger and Jeremy Linn. Geiger-Linn fell to Hesston's Connor Dyck and Joel Boettger in the ninth-place match, 9-3, to close their season with a record of 25-11.

Independence won its third consecutive 4A team title, getting a third-place finish in singles, and second and third place from its doubles teams to score 36 points. Hesston and Topeka Hayden followed with 22 points each.

The 16 points Dippel earned for his first-place finish were enough to give Smoky Valley fifth in the team standings, while Abilene was eighth with 10 points.

Class 3-2-1A

At Wichita, Ellsworth junior Kevin Davis closed his season with a victory in the ninth-place match at the 3-2-1A state championships.

Davis defeated Immaculata's Mike Bassett, 9-5, in his final match Saturday, giving him a 3-2 record during the two-day state tournament at the Wichita State University Tennis Center, and ending his season with a mark of 21-8.

Wichita Collegiate reclaimed the 3-2-1A state team title with 38 points, edging Conway Springs in second with 34. Claflin was the tournament's defending champion, but Collegiate earned its 17th state title since 1986.
