Teenage girl killed in rollover crash
LINCOLNVILLE -- A 16-year-old girl from Kansas City, Mo., Kelly Anne Weakley, was killed Friday night when the car she was riding in rolled in a ditch. Another passenger, Keven Joe Lockwood, 24, Herington, was flown by air ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition Saturday afternoon.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Zachariah Markus J. Remmers, 23, Herington, was driving east at 8:08 p.m. Friday on 290th Road and lost control when the car hit a couple of potholes. The car began to skid on the road and Remmers lost control, entering the north ditch and rolling 1Ôªø1âÑ2 times at the driveway at 2574 290th, about 2Ôªø1âÑ2 miles east of Lincolnville. The car came to a stop on its driver's side, facing north and against a steel fence.
Remmers was taken to Herington Municipal Hospital with possible injuries, according to the patrol. His condition was not released.
All three occupants in the car were wearing seat belts.
FEMA gives RECs $52 million
TOPEKA -- Federal officials have awarded more than $52 million to Kansas rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities for damage from the December 2007 winter storm.
The funds were announced Friday by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. In all, 20 cooperatives and 24 municipal utilities received assistance to restore damaged facilities.
Funds were part of FEMA's public assistance program. FEMA pays 75 percent of eligible costs for repair or replacement of damaged utilities; the state pays 10 percent, and the local entity, 15 percent.
