Salina Municipal Golf Course will be the site of a Class 5A regional tournament today, where members of the Salina South and Salina Central golf teams hope to extend their season for another week.
South and Central will be among seven teams competing today at the Salina Muni, where tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. and run through 10:10 a.m.
Only the top three teams at today's regional will advance to next week's 5A state tournament at McPherson. The top five individuals from non-qualifying teams will also advance to state.
Teams playing in Salina today, in addition to the Mustangs and Cougars, will be Great Bend, Hays, Hutchinson, Liberal and McPherson.
The Sacred Heart, Southeast of Saline and St. John's Military golf teams are among nine schools competing today at a 3A regional at Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course, where tee times also begin at 8:30 a.m.
The Saline County schools hope to return home for next week's 3A state tournament, which will be held Monday, May 19 at Salina Municipal. Only the top two teams and low five individuals advance from today's Hillsboro regional to the state tournament.
Other teams competing today at the Hillsboro regional will be Republic County, Beloit, Ellinwood, Ellsworth, Hillsboro and Lyons.
Baseball
Southeast of Saline begins postseason play today with a 3A regional quarterfinal at Marion.
The Trojans (9-11) will face Lyons (7-11) in today's 2 p.m. opener, with the winner advancing to Tuesday's semifinals to take on Sacred Heart (14-2). The Knights are the regional's top seed and received a first-round bye.
Ell-Saline (9-9) will meet Bennington (7-11) in today's 2-1A regional opener at Galva. The winner advances to Tuesday's semifinals and will meet top-seed Moundridge.
Softball
The Sacred Heart softball team, three-time defending state champions, begin its quest to make it four straight with a 3A regional quarterfinal game today at Bill Burke Park against Lyons (4-16).
If the Knights (15-5) win today, they will play in Tuesday's semifinals and will face either Beloit or Ellsworth.
Southeast of Saline is the regional's top seed and has earned a first-round bye. The Trojans will play in Tuesday's 4:30 p.m. semifinal against the winner of today's game between Republic County and Bennington/Tescott.
Ell-Saline (1-15) meets Lincoln (3-12) in a 2-1A regional quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. today at Lincoln. The winner moves on today Wednesday's semifinals at Minneapolis and will face top seed Sylvan.
Soccer
Both the Salina South and Salina Central girls soccer teams will also be in action today with Class 5-1A regional quarterfinal action.
Central (7-8-1) will be at home to face Newton (6-10-0) in a 5 p.m. contest at Salina Stadium. The winner advances to Tuesday's regional semifinal at Topeka Seaman.
South (3-11-2) goes on the road today, playing at Emporia (9-6-1) in a 6 p.m. quarterfinal. The South-Emporia winner moves on to Tuesday's semifinal at McPherson.
